Tianjin, China-based online pharmacy Tian Jin, which operates in Guangdong province, has received a warning from the Food and Drug Administration about the potential of its generic version of Cialis.
The generic version of Cialis, sold as Tianjin, is the same active ingredient as the brand name.
In a statement to The New York Times, Tian Jin said that the FDA's "suspicion that the drug is dangerous" for people with certain conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease "is based on a lack of knowledge and information about Cialis."
The FDA, which regulates the use of prescription drugs in China, said that Tian Jin did not meet the "black box" information requirements for the drug in the Chinese labeling.
"We are aware that the FDA has issued a warning letter that Cialis is not approved for use in the United States," said Eli Lilly and Co. "In this letter, the FDA has recommended that you do not buy Tianjin, as the drug is not approved for use in China."
Tian Jin, the director of Tian Jin Pharma Inc., said that the agency would not discuss the potential risks of the drug with consumers.
"This is not an option that's on the table," he said.
Tian Jin's spokesperson, Zhang Chunrui, said in a statement that the drug does not affect the U. S. Food and Drug Administration's regulations regarding the importation and sale of pharmaceutical drugs.
Tian Jin's website said that the company had made a list of 10 medicines with "unmet medical need" and "a list of potential side effects."
